TCB Insights: Strengthening Minnesota’s Future Workforce

Mental health is profoundly important in professional life — and for future innovators. By supporting initiatives that address mental health and substance use challenges early on, businesses can create a culture of wellness in the workplace (and in everyday life). This is an opportunity to strengthen Minnesota's workforce by empowering young people to gain healthy habits and lead fulfilling professional and personal lives.

Mental health and substance use challenges are often intertwined, especially for young people who are finding their way in the world. At this age, challenging mental health symptoms can emerge, making it hard to get through the day. We often see teenagers and young adults turning to nicotine, marijuana, and alcohol to cope—chemicals that can have a direct impact on their mental health.

During this time, young people are learning about themselves, the brain is still developing, and they may not make the best decisions. But the skills learned in mental health treatment can become a lifelong road map for coping with inevitable daily challenges.

These skills—including self-awareness, emotional self-regulation, relationship and communication skills, and setting healthy boundaries—lay the foundation for navigating the complexities of relationships, education, and work. Young people foster resilience and can adapt to challenges with confidence while maintaining stability in their personal and professional lives.

Mental health issues are common, and we shouldn’t blame ourselves for things that are often no fault of our own, like genetics and environmental stressors. Don’t ever feel ashamed for needing help.
