Less than two years after joining UnitedHealth Group, Andrew Witty is taking on a new role at the company.

On Monday, the Minnetonka-based health insurer announced that Witty has been appointed president. In the new position, he’ll oversee business strategy, business development, and enterprise research and development, according to a news release. He’ll also oversee “clinical capacities,” the release said.

He'll also continue serving as CEO of Optum, the company’s pharmacy benefit management division.

It bears noting that UnitedHealth’s clinic business has been growing within recent history. In the third quarter, the company’s medical clinic business increased 34 percent year-over-year to $8.1 billion. And that division will likely continue to grow over the next few years: In June, the company received federal clearance to acquire DaVita Medical Group, which owns more than 200 clinics in five states.

UnitedHealth Group first hired Witty as CEO of Optum in March 2018. He joined the company after more than three decades with London-based GlaxoSmithKline, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world.

Before he came to the U.S., Witty served as chancellor of the University of Nottingham. He was knighted in 2012 for “services to the U.K. economy,” according to UnitedHealth Group.

Witty isn’t the first Optum exec to rise through the ranks. In June, Optum chief operating officer Dirk McMahon was named CEO of UnitedHealth Care, the company’s platform for health care coverage and benefit services.
