New Timberwolves Owners Debut
New Timberwolves and Lynx controlling owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez were introduced to the media Friday in a press conference held in Las Vegas where the NBA Summer League is taking place. The duo answered prepared questions from Wolves broadcaster Michael Grady and took more questions from the mostly national basketball press in attendance.
The duo emphasized that their tenure as minority partners over the last half decade promises continuity rather than revolution. They had been given atypical levels of influence during their run up to majority ownership, before their relationship with ex-owner Glen Taylor soured.
Lore said the team plans to “lead with innovation,” announcing the development of a new app that will allow fans to buy improved seating as the game progresses and seat holders go home. They promised to aim high, “having a culture where the best players in the world want to play,” by providing them with the best resources and care, and paying whatever league tax may be required to “create value and a sustainable culture,” said Lore.
Rodriguez said in his experience that new sports ownership tends to overemphasize the short term and neglect the long-term, and they were focused on avoiding that pitfall. “We’re going to thread the needle between being aggressive and disciplined,” he noted. He said the duo plan to “invest in the community, be present, and show up,” but “the best thing you can do for your community is win.”
Lore said they are looking for “an absolute superstar to run the business,” replacing recently departed CEO Ethan Casson. Longer term projects include reestablishing the team’s atrophied ties to 1990s superstar Kevin Garnett and planning for a new arena to replace Target Center, though they offered few details other than they have been studying the issue. “A new arena is what our fans deserve,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez added he was honored to be the first Latino owner of an NBA club and that his guiding philosophy is to invest, “and success will follow.”
