A labor agreement affecting 13,000 CenturyLink employees, including about 1,800 in Minnesota, expired Saturday night, but the company and the unions representing the workers have extended the contract while negotiations continue.

The company, which plans to hire roughly 15 employees in the near term, outgrew its space in the Fifth Street Towers and has relocated to the Campbell Mithun Tower in downtown Minneapolis.
The national organization, which represents 56 unions, said it endorses a boycott of American Crystal Sugar products; meanwhile, an American Crystal Sugar representative said the company is currently focused on its replacement workers.
A union representing former employees of Qwest, which merged last year with CenturyLink, has authorized a strike in the event that workers are unable to reach a labor agreement by midnight on Sunday.
The musicians rejected a proposal from the orchestra’s leaders, which would have cut players’ average annual pay from $135,000 to $89,000; the organization, which said it can’t afford to continue paying players under the former contract, subsequently locked out the musicians.

The retail giant has already begun hiring seasonal workers at distribution centers and intends to begin hiring temporary store workers next month.
The previous record was set in fiscal 2011, when the university spawned nine start-ups.
Some locked-out American Crystal Sugar workers appealed to North Dakota’s Supreme Court after being denied unemployment benefits; meanwhile, a Crystal Sugar executive said that replacement workers are doing a “fabulous job.”
Tuition will be reduced by $10,000 next year, but as the school also slashes scholarships, lower-need students who are not dependent upon state and federal grants will see the largest reduction in out-of-pocket costs.

The stores, none of which are in Minnesota, are expected to close by late February; the company declined to disclose the number of affected workers.
