Anchor Dick’s Sporting Goods to Open at Rosedale

The 80,000-square-foot store was built on the former Herberger’s site.

Not long after Herberger’s underwent an expensive and upscale renovation at Rosedale Center, the venerable retailer with the red rose logo closed its doors.

That was in 2018. Donald Trump was still in the White House. Americans hadn’t yet heard the words Covid-19 and hybrid work.

Six years later, Rosedale Center is ushering in a new era on the site where Herberger’s shoppers used an untold number of coupons to purchase their wardrobes and home goods.

An 80,000-square-foot Dick’s sporting goods store is opening this month and will become a new anchor at the Roseville mall, which has some of the highest traffic in the Twin Cities. Mall management said Rosedale attracts about 10 million visitors a year.

Rosedale Center announced Wednesday that construction on the new Dick’s store has been completed. A ribbon cutting ceremony is set for Oct. 16, while a grand opening community celebration will be held on Oct. 26. Rosedale Center said the latter event will “feature celebrities, mascots, cheerleaders, and more.”

While the Covid-19 pandemic drove some brick-and-mortar retailers out of business, several stores have turned to experiential shopping experiences to satisfy mercurial consumers.

In its Wednesday announcement, Rosedale Center said, “The new Dick’s store features golf hitting bays with TrackMan technology, a HitTrax multisport cage, House of Cleats, equipment services counter, an expanded premium footwear selection, and apparel, accessories, and equipment from the hottest brands.”

While Rosedale Center did not refer to this large Dick’s store as a House of Sport, it has some elements that are similar to a 115,000-square-foot Dick’s that opened in 2022 at Ridgedale. That superstore includes a 35-foot climbing wall and extensive offerings of sporting goods equipment and apparel.

People who travel regularly on Snelling Avenue have been able to watch construction of the Roseville Dick’s unfold. News broke in March 2023 that a huge Dick’s sporting goods store would occupy the Herberger’s site.

“Each and every day, we are focused on delivering a better experience, more choices and uniqueness to the Rosedale Center guest,” Lisa Crain, vice president of retail for JLL, said in a written statement. “The addition of Dick’s as well as other new additions are part of our ongoing efforts. We will continue listening to the community and our guests as we create the premier destination in the area.”

Macy’s and Von Maur are anchor tenants at Rosedale. Several smaller stores have opened in the mall in recent months. Those include Woodhouse Spa, IKEA Design Studio, Lululemon, Anthropologie, Warby Parker, Hollister, and Shake Shack.
