Startup Snapshot: Find My Electric
When Brian Altstatt went looking for a used electric vehicle in 2019, specifically a Tesla Model S, he found that a marketplace for secondhand EVs essentially didn’t exist.
Popular used car sites might have had EV listings, but they lacked specifics, such as filters and charging specs.
For Altstatt and co-founder Dan Oksnevad, both with tech backgrounds, the path was obvious. They launched Find My Electric (FME), a used-EV marketplace, in 2019.
The platform features listings of every EV on the U.S. market. Buyers can pare listings via filters like battery size and exterior color.
Sellers can list for free or pay $49, which adds support and enhanced visibility, with photos and a vehicle history. Sellers who don’t want to deal with buyers can get a cash offer from FME’s EV dealer network. The site also offers guides for first-time buyers.

Building out an online marketplace is complicated, says Altstatt. “You have to have enough buyer traffic, but you have to have enough cars too, or you won’t have buyers.”
FME had good timing, finding profitability even during the pandemic as it rode the Tesla boom. Today, it’s the No. 1 marketplace by volume for used EVs in the U.S. and has several thousand daily users. More than $350 million in vehicle value has passed through its platform—entirely bootstrapped, despite investment offers.
The founders hope to expand to Canada and other countries.
At the end of the day, it’s about sustainability. “The used market is kind of forgotten by OEMs like Tesla,” says Altstatt. “Our mission is to accelerate the transition to sustainable transportation by making used EVs accessible to everyone.”
