Meet the Plymouth Purveyors of Physical Media
One size doesn’t fit all. That’s especially true when it comes to the nation’s largest optical media manufacturer, The ADS Group.

The Plymouth-based purveyor of physical media has more than 30 years of experience manufacturing CDs, DVDs, and USB drives. Through their work with subsidiary companies Copycats Media and Studio 120, their team of more than 200 media experts offer all kinds of media options including vinyl record pressing, video content creation, multi-language translation (including American Sign Language), media authoring, replication, duplication, and packaging.
Key to their business success is their ability to pivot, adapting to the newest forms of physical media based on trends and demand. “We have to continue to evolve for whatever form the next physical media [is],” says Connie Comeau, chief operating officer of The ADS Group.
The endurance of physical media matters to more than just savvy kids embracing the nostalgia of yesteryear. It matters to businesses that want to stand out in their marketing, sales, and community impact. When it comes to ensuring clients achieve their goals, The ADS Group’s secret B2B sauce embraces three key ingredients: personalization, simplification, and customization.
How The ADS Group evolved to own the physical media market.
1989 | The Advanced Duplication Services (ADS) Group begins operations, providing cassette tape duplication for local musicians and indie record labels.
1999 | Private equity firm Hudson Valley III, LLC, led by Jean Lagotte, Jr., acquires the company. Now almost 25 years later, Lagotte continues his commitment to the business as chairman of the board. “His unwavering dedication to our team has fostered a culture of collaboration and excellence,” says Tracy ReiderBower, business development.
2003 | The ADS Group acquires Provac Disc Media and begins offering manufacturing and replication services for optical media.
2006 | The ADS Group acquires two nationally recognized businesses: Digital Excellence (formerly EMC), which was founded in 1954 and based in St. Paul, and Precision Powerhouse, which was founded in 1983 and based in Minneapolis. This Twin Cities acquisition enables The ADS Group to offer audio production, audio and video mastering, video post-production, and graphics and animation.
2008 | The company acquires Copycats Media, and officially expands into vinyl record creation and supporting independent musicians.
2012 | The ADS Group launches “Studio 108,” a space for onsite video shoots, including a new green screen.
2022 | Copycats Media debuts the first major vinyl pressing plant in Minnesota, based in Osseo.
“Whether that product is a record, CD, tape, or a streamed option, we are servicing both the artist and consumer demands,” says Peter Stone, chief financial officer of The ADS Group, “and each option comes with a unique experience in the delivery.”
Personalization. The ADS Group was among the first in the media manufacturing biz to prioritize face-to-face consulting—and it’s no coincidence that their average client tenure is 15 years. In an era of increasingly online sales, this method matters more than ever. “Our mission is centered on the core belief that our employees and client relationships are a cornerstone of our success. Period,” Comeau says. “We’re committed to fostering a workplace culture built on integrity, community, inclusion, and empowerment.”
Simplification. The ADS Group strives to make every project as simple as possible for their clients, which range from medical powerhouses Medtronic and Boston Scientific to Zumba Fitness and industry bigwigs like Universal Music Group, Sony, and Penguin Random House. Their former tagline, “Let us be the experts,” remains true as ever.
Customization. Client satisfaction is critical to The ADS Group, which is why they work to ensure clients get exactly what they want, with robust offerings that can be tailored to each business’s need. Copycats Media, for example, will soon debut 12 colored vinyl variants based on client demand, which will be exclusive to their Osseo pressing facility. Of all their projects, The ADS Group specializes in quick-turn deadlines, sometimes turning around a local project in a matter of days, depending on client needs.
While some naïve digital-media proponents may scoff at the experienced media pros, wondering, isn’t physical media dead?—they need only look to the current market. As streaming services like Hulu, Netflix, and Disney+ continue to hike their prices, the price of DVD players has dropped, leading to slow-but-sure growth in the consumption of physical media. In fact, many consumers say they prefer the permanence and ownership of physical media like DVD, Blu-ray, and CDs. Comeau says she continues to see growing interest in more niche, specialty media like cassettes, VHS, and eight-track tapes. The popularity of vinyl’s popularity led the longtime media manufacturer to open Minnesota’s first large-scale vinyl record pressing plant in Osseo last summer—one of only about 30 record pressing facilities in the country.
“With this generation coming up, they have lived virtually,” she says. “They have lived on Instagram, on Facebook. We’ll see it become simplified. They want real. They want tangible.”
