Social Venture Partners Targets Aspiring Philanthropists
With charitable giving on the decline, according to the latest philanthropy report from Giving USA, Social Venture Partners Minnesota—a nonprofit predicated on engaged giving— is launching a new program to help aspiring donors get more invested.
“We know that many of our partners want real human connection,” said SVP ‘s new executive director Ellen Walthour, a career philanthropy executive and former CEO of The BrandLab. “This is something meaningful for people to get involved in.”
The new program, called “Together for Good,” includes six monthly sessions designed to provide an overview of philanthropy, from defining giving goals to understanding grantmaking. Speakers will include Adair Mosely, CEO of the African American Leadership Forum Twin Cities, Marcia Ballinger and Jamie Millard of Ballinger Leafblad, an executive search firm focused on nonprofits, and racial equity coach Seena Hodges.

“The goal is to inspire people to get more deeply and deliberately involved in their community— in giving, and doing so with others who care,” Walthour said.
To join the program, participants are asked to make a $3,000 gift to Social Venture Partners, $2,500 of which is tax-deductible and goes into the SVP collective giving pool. After completing the program, participants become official partners of SVP, which means they can weigh in on the organization’s grant-making process. Walthour said SVP will issue two or three $20,000 grants this year, to local, youth-focused originations.
“There’s a huge push right now in nonprofits to share the stories of what organizations are doing for society,” Walthour said. “Let’s get people more civically engaged in a meaningful way.”
Registration runs through April 30. The program kicks off May 28.
