Company dinners take two forms, broadly speaking: The business-casual blowout that needs the most room at the best price, and the backroom summit among executives and clients. This restaurant directory has private-dining options for both. There’s the cozy, snazzy Bar La Grassa (seats up to 32), the bowels of Hell’s Kitchen (up to 325), and more than 130 others.
For those looking to impress, it’s worth noting a trend toward the “experiential.” OpenTable, the restaurant-reservation company, has tracked this: Forty-two percent of diners surveyed said they’d be more interested in memorable dining—with a tasting menu, a show, a theme, etc.—this year versus last.
Chef Ann Ahmed’s three metro-area restaurants offer distinct spaces for private dining (see: the Gai Noi rooftop near Loring Park). And at Khâluna, Ahmed’s Laotian restaurant in East Harriet, there’s a room called the Shop. “When people aren’t dining in there, it is literally a shop,” she says—but with a homier vibe, plus a kitchen island for cooking demonstrations.
The Shop sells artisan goods from Southeast Asia, many of which Ahmed buys from craftswomen in her home country of Laos. “When these companies book out the Shop, they want gifts for their clients,” she says. One of her most popular items is a sticky-rice basket. “That’s usually something we’ll package up for them. … They’re taking home a piece of that experience.”
In September, chef Daniel del Prado, with restaurateur Ryan Burnet, announced plans to open another memorable-sounding space: Americana, in the 50th and France neighborhood. Its defining feature would be a greenhouse-style rooftop patio, available for groups.
Del Prado doesn’t like full-restaurant buyouts—“You have to charge way more money for events to make it worth it for me,” he says, “because I live by my regulars.” But at his North Loop steakhouse Porzana, opened in 2023, there’s a second floor with different rooms. That works for private dining, and he’s seen high demand. “I was like, ‘I’m leaving a lot of money on the table, not having event spaces.’ Because Porzana—it’s, like, several events a week.”
Environment is crucial, Ahmed notes, lest a private room feel like a tucked-away afterthought. For businesses booking spaces, “it’s when there’s out-of-towners, when they really want to impress in terms of what our city has to offer,” she says. “Nobody wants to sit in a four-walled room with no life aside from tables and chairs.” –Erik Tormoen
