Dorsey Taps Peter Nelson as Managing Partner
Dorsey & Whitney, one of the largest law firms in Minnesota, on Thursday announced Peter Nelson as its new managing partner.
The international firm’s policy committee elected Nelson on Wednesday, according to a news release. He begins his three-year term July 1, succeeding Bill Stoeri, who served six and a half years, reaching the office’s term limit.
Nelson joined the firm’s headquarters in 2008, making a lateral move from a major firm in Houston. He co-leads the firm’s finance and restructuring group and has “significant experience” integrating new offices, the release stated, having been closely involved in the addition of Dorsey’s Dallas and Phoenix offices.
“Peter is a great communicator, collaborator, and consensus builder,” policy committee chair E. Eric Rytter said in the release. He adds that Nelson “has a deep understanding of the wide array of different practices throughout the firm’s platform and what is needed to support those practices.”

Amid a flurry of tie-ups among large law firms in recent years, Dorsey stands out in downtown Minneapolis for not having jumped on the “big merger bandwagon,” TCB senior editor Liz Fedor reported in a March 2020 cover story.
At that time, three of downtown’s 10 biggest firms were executing mergers.
Stoeri told Fedor at the time that Dorsey “just had the best [revenue] year in the history of the firm.” He noted Dorsey was growing through acquisitions and hiring of lawyers from other firms.
