Xcel Targets Biz Customers With Energy Assessment Giveaway

The Minneapolis-based electricity and natural gas provider has launched an online contest that will award a free energy-use assessment, typically valued at $1,700, to the winning business customer.

Xcel Energy, Inc., recently launched an online “Business Customer Challenge” sweepstakes to encourage energy efficiency among businesses, the company said.

Sherryl Volkert, senior product portfolio manager for Xcel Energy, told Twin Cities Business that the sweepstakes is available to Xcel Energy business customers in Minnesota and Colorado. Any energy-related question about business operations counts as an entry.
 
“So far, we’ve received several questions about how to choose the right light bulbs and cut down on heating costs,” Volkert said, adding that a sample question submitted was: “What is the most efficient way to distribute the heat in our building and what are best practices to conserve energy?”

 
The promotion, which began in November, runs through the end of January, at which point Xcel will randomly select one winner. The winner will receive a free energy efficiency assessment, valued at $1,700. According to Volkert, the assessment includes a walk-through of the winner’s facility (to identify specific energy efficiency solutions that are most effective for the business), an analysis of the company’s utility bills, and an “action plan” to create a more efficient facility (which may include Xcel Energy rebates). The winner will also qualify for a 30 percent rebate (in addition to Xcel’s regular rebates) for implementing the measures identified in the assessment.
 
Volkert said that the “Business Customer Challenge” promotion is only expected to occur this year.
 
“We’re hoping to get a better idea of the challenges that our customers face so that we can be as effective as possible in providing them resources and information to be more efficient,” she said about Xcel Energy’s decision to launch the promotion.

Separately, the Minnesota Department of Commerce recently deemed Xcel Energy customers who install certified systems as being eligible for its solar thermal and solar electric rebates. The rebates (which total up to $250,000 per year) are part of the 10-year, $150 million “Made in Minnesota Solar Incentive Program.”
