Thomson Reuters Corporation-one of Minnesota's top employers-announced Tuesday that it has acquired Bellevue, Washington-based Serengeti Law.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Thomson Reuters is a New York-based business information company, and its legal division has significant operations in Eagan. The acquired business will be aligned with Thomson Reuters' corporate, government, and academic business unit within the company's legal division.

Serengeti Law's 50 employees will join Thomson Reuters and will remain based in Seattle and Chicago. The business unit will operate under the direction of Thomson Reuters' Mike Suchsland.

“Corporate legal departments around the world are rapidly adopting software and services that solve legal workflow needs more simply and more efficiently,” Suchsland said in a statement. “The acquisition of Serengeti Law provides us with the bedrock for building a leading suite of offerings for the corporate general counsel.” Suchsland also said that the acquisition of Serengeti will expand Thomson Reuters' client base.

According to Thomson Reuters, Sergenti Tracker-a management and e-billing system-leads the market among corporations and firms. The system helps legal departments track, control, manage, analyze, and report on legal activities. According to Serengeti Law's Web site, the company's services are used by 21,000 law firms.

Serengeti Law's former vice president of product management, Tom Melling, will serve as president of the new business. Melling said in a statement that joining Thomson Reuters is “a natural next step” in the company's growth. “With the experience and support of the Thomson Reuters organization, we can ensure that the legal profession will benefit from the rapid evolution of the Serengeti platform, the expansion of practical data-driven functionality, and the growth of networking opportunities for our international user community,” he said.

Thomson Reuters employs more than 50,000 people in more than 100 countries. Its legal division is one of Minnesota's largest employers. It employed 6,600 in the state as of June 1.
