Surly Sells New Beer at Target Field, But Not Furious

Surly developed "Bandwagon," a West Coast India pale ale, exclusively for sale at Target Field-but it won't sell its flagship beer, Furious, at the stadium this season.

The Minnesota Twins recently unveiled a new group of food vendors and craft brewers that will make their debut at Target Field this season-including Brooklyn Center-based Surly Brewing Company.

Surly on Monday announced which of its beers will be sold at Twins games-and the lineup could make local craft beer fans both ecstatic and furious.

Surly, which operates a stand in section 124 of the stadium, will pour a new beer developed exclusively for sale at Target Field: Bandwagon, a West Coast india pale ale. The beer, which is pale gold in color, is brewed with pale and crystal malts, as well as centennial and chinook hops, and fermented with English ale yeast. Surly says the beer has “flavors of caramelly biscuits slathered in pineapple-orange marmalade.”

Surly will also offer a rotating lineup of other brews throughout the season, including Cynic, Bender, Coffee Bender, Bitter Brewer, and Hell.

“We're psyched to be bringing our first new beer we've brewed in a while to Target Field,” Surly founder and President Omar Ansari said in a statement. “It's a hoppy ale that'll go well with an afternoon of watching the Twins.”

Many fans would contend that Furious-an India pale ale and Surly's most popular beer-would also go well with an afternoon of watching the Twins. But the company, citing a shortage of certain hop varieties and the already-lengthy waiting list of retailers looking for the beer, said that it won't serve Furious at Target Field this season.
