St. Jude Medical, Inc., announced Wednesday that it plans to double the size of its Plymouth facility, which houses part of its cardiovascular division.

The Little Canada-based medical-device maker said that it will make a three-story, 275,000-square-foot addition to the existing 205,000-square-foot facility at 5050 Nathan Lane. The enlarged campus will consolidate operations of the company's cardiovascular division. Employees in that division now work at leased sites in Maple Grove and Minnetonka in addition to the Plymouth facility.

The expansion is pending approval from the City of Plymouth. St. Jude said it hopes to begin construction in February and complete the expansion in 2013. The company did not reveal the cost of the project.

“This expansion is viewed as a consolidation and space solution for the company but also acknowledges a need for adequate space to house our growing business in the years ahead,” Frank J. Callaghan, president of St. Jude's cardiovascular division, said in a statement.

Through a spokeswoman, Callaghan told the Pioneer Press that the expansion will not create jobs immediately.

St. Jude Medical is the 15th-largest public company in Minnesota based on its 2010 revenue, which totaled $5.2 billion. The company's 26-acre site in Plymouth is the former home of AGA Medical, which St. Jude acquired in 2010.
