Mayo Clinic was named the best hospital in the nation among the nearly 5,000 that were ranked, according to U.S. News & World Report.
 
This marks the Rochester-based organization’s second time atop the list (the first was in 2014).
 
“We owe our success to our unique system of care as we collaborate across specialties to focus on the individual needs of each patient,” Mayo CEO Dr. John Noseworthy said in a statement. “It’s one reason why we consistently receive high rankings in measures like these.”
 
Hospitals were graded on their reputation, mortality index, patient safety, expertise in various specialties and other care-related indicators.
 
Of the 16 specialties scored in the report, Mayo placed first in 8 of them. Those were: diabetes and endocrinology, geriatrics, gynecology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, pulmonology, and urology.
 
Mayo was also ranked No. 2 in cardiology and heart surgery, ear, nose and throat, and orthopedics. Additionally, Mayo earned third place for its specialty in treating cancer.
 
Aside from Mayo, ten other Minnesota hospitals were either “nationally ranked” or noted as “high performing” institutions in the report.
 
Minneapolis-based Abbott Northwestern was called the best hospital in the Twin Cities area and was nationally ranked in five specialties.
