Lindquist & Vennum Merging with Philadelphia-based Law Firm

The combined company will have more than 650 lawyers in 15 locations across the country.

Minneapolis-based law firm Lindquist & Vennum announced on Tuesday that it is merging with Philidelphia-based Ballard Spahr, creating a combined firm with more than 650 lawyers in 15 offices across the country.
Terms of the deal, which is effective January 1, were not disclosed. The combined legal services company will use Ballard Spahr’s name.
“We’re excited to join a forward-thinking firm like Ballard, whose attorneys share our view that client relationships are strategic partnerships,” Lindquist & Vennum managing partner Dennis O’Malley said in a statement.
The merger is said to expand Ballard’s corporate merger and acquisitions, finance, litigation, and middle-market practice areas, as well as give extend the law firm’s footprint to the Midwest; Lindquist, founded in 1968, currently has offices in Minneapolis, Sioux Falls and Denver.
“Lindquist & Vennum is a first-rate law firm with considerable strength in the areas we want to expand,” Ballard Spahr chair Mark Stewart said. “This merger will add a sizeable group of experienced corporate partners to our business and finance department and significantly increase our M&A capabilities, particularly in the private equity space.”
Stewart also cited Minneapolis’ role as a hub for financial services, medical device manufacturing, retail and agribusiness as other benefits of the transaction.
Big mergers are a growing trend among major law firms. As companies look to expand or bolster their practice areas, Ward Bower of legal consulting firm Altman Weil told TCB in a June 2016 feature that firms were increasingly expanding outside their existing geographic reach; in 2015, about 80 percent of transactions were multi-city deals.
