Instead of shopping for the right printer, you might want to shop for the right ink first; ink is the big cost of running a printer. Manufacturers price to sell, knowing you’ll be back for ink every few months. At around $400 (pricing varies based on features), the HPOfficejet Pro 8500 is on the expensive side for ink-jet printers, but the all-in-one color printer/fax/copier/scanner is actually meant to be compared with office laser printers. Ink jet cartridges cost less than laser printer toner. HP says each ink jet page costs about 50 percent less than laser printed pages. The print quality can match print-shop results, allowing companies to save money on printing marketing materials, for example. HP also says the Officejet can match laser printer speeds, up to 15 pages per minute or 11 per minute with color. It’s wireless, so employees can print from their laptops. TheOfficejet is comparable to other high-end ink-jets, such as the Canon Pixma MX7600 and Lexmark’s X9575 Professional. So if you see a better bargain, don’t be afraid to go for it.
