Drill Down to the Inner Artist

At Frattallone's Ace Hardware, the handyman's creative side gets its due.

Finally, there’s a one-stop shop for power drills and high culture.

Frattallone’s Ace Hardware, a Twin Cities chain with 15 stores, is exhibiting a little-known side of the business: hardware store as art-supply source.

“We have so many artists coming in every day to buy parts for their art,” says Mike Frattallone, who owns the stores with his father, Larry, and brother, Tom. For customers whose DIY skills tend toward the creative, they decided that a competitive show of hardware art “would be a natural fit, and it is.”

This year’s show is the second annual and will be at the company’s newest store, at 27th and Hennepin in South Minneapolis, through December. Customers can peruse the mechanical masterpieces. The Frattallones do the judging themselves.

There was no winner named yet at press time, but an early favorite was a seven-foot-tall wrench made of other tools. “Crazy cool,” says Mike.
