Bill Clinton Next Political Celeb. to Speak at MN Event
President Barack Obama made a stop in Cannon Falls on Monday, and he'll be back in the state before month's end when he joins a long list of other prominent politicians at the American Legion's national convention in Minneapolis.
Next in line for a Minnesota speaking gig: Bill Clinton.
The Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation (MHIF) on Tuesday announced that Clinton-former U.S. president and founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation-will be the keynote speaker at the foundation's annual Spirit of the Heart gala.
Clinton will join physicians, industry and corporate leaders, members of the community, and patients impacted by heart disease at the Minneapolis Hyatt Regency on October 29. The gala will focus on the MHIF's new research and education efforts.
“We are honored to have President Clinton as the keynote speaker at this important event to raise awareness of heart disease and how we can fight it,” James V. Toscano, MHIF president, said in a statement. “He has dedicated his professional life to improving the lives of people around the world, and in that same spirit, the MHIF is committed to improving lives by creating a world without heart disease.”
The American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation together created the “Alliance for a Healthier Generation” in 2005. Its primary goal is to lessen the threat of childhood obesity and encourage children to make healthy lifestyle choices-decisions that could decrease the occurrence of heart disease later in life.
“Through innovative education programs and groundbreaking cardiovascular research, MHIF is discovering how to prevent and treat heart disease at ever-earlier stages, a goal consistent with President Clinton's objective,” stated Toscano. “Research sponsored by MHIF is making positive changed in how heart disease is diagnosed and treated across the country, and we are taking the issue of heart disease prevention to the public in innovative, effective ways that are changing the way people think about their heart and their health.”
The Clinton Foundation's other initiatives aim to help people with HIV/AIDS, fight climate change, and aid the economic growth of Africa and Latin America, among other efforts.
The MHIF bills itself as one of the nation's top 10 centers for cardiovascular research and education. Many of its programs are conducted in conjunction with Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis and address prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of various heart and vascular issues.
