After Closing 4 Stores, Target Opens 4 More

After announcing plans to close locations in Florida, Georgia, Arizona, and California, the retailer said it plans to open four new stores in Florida, California, and New York.

Target Corporation announced plans on Monday to open stores in Miami, Florida; Westlake Village, California; Bronx-Throggs Neck, New York; and Sayville, New York.
The announcement comes shortly after the Minneapolis-based retailer said it plans to close four locations in Leesburg, Florida; Morrow, Georgia; Chandler, Arizona; and Chula Vista, California. Target cited those locations’ financial performances as the reason for the closings and the stores are slated to close in February, at the conclusion of the company’s 2013 fiscal year.
Target opened 19 locations in the United States this year, and the four newest additions will open next year, spokeswoman Erika Winkels told Twin Cities Business.
Target said that the approximately 140,000-square-foot Miami location will open in October. It will be the 31st Target store in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area and will employ roughly 200 people. The store will have a pharmacy and a Starbucks.

The retailer said it plans to open the Westlake Village store in July. At approximately 138,000 square feet, the store will be the first to open in the California city and will employ between 150 and 200 people. The store will also have a pharmacy and a Starbucks.
Also scheduled to open in July, the Bronx-Throggs Neck and Sayville, New York locations will each employ approximately 200 to 250 people. Target said that the 165,000-square-foot Bronx-Throggs Neck store is its third location in the Bronx; meanwhile, the 144,000-square-foot Sayville store will be the 21st location on Long Island. Both locations will have pharmacies, optical services, and Starbucks outlets.
Target has also recently expanded its footprint in Canada. Winkels said that the retailer has thus far opened 122 stores in 10 provinces. Target will open its final two stores in Canada for this year on Friday, bringing the total to 124. Winkels said the retailer plans to have up to 135 stores in Canada by the end of 2014, and approximately 150 stores by 2017.
Separately, the retailer recently introduced a service that allows customers to pick up online orders at stores as part of its effort to attract holiday shoppers.
Target currently operates a total of 1,919 retail stores—1,797 in the United States and 122 in Canada. The company reported $73.3 billion for the fiscal year that ended February 3.
