A Legacy of Opportunity: MEDA Celebrates 55 Years of Empowering Entrepreneurs
From our founding in 1971, MEDA has remained steadfast in its mission to help BIPOC entrepreneurs succeed by providing access to capital, business consulting, education, and the connections needed to grow thriving businesses.

What began as a bold vision to expand economic opportunity has grown into one of Minnesota’s leading organizations supporting entrepreneurs. Over the past five decades, MEDA has helped thousands of business owners overcome barriers to success while strengthening communities, creating jobs, and building lasting economic impact. Today, our work spans lending, technical assistance, procurement readiness, leadership development, and strategic partnerships designed to help entrepreneurs at every stage of their business journey. MEDA also hosts one of only seven Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) Business Centers in the nation, helping businesses solve complex issues, access capital, and position themselves to compete nationally and globally.
Our impact is measured not only by the businesses we serve today, but by the success they achieve over time. MEDA clients experience an average annual revenue growth of 67%, while businesses that remain engaged with MEDA for 10 years grow revenues by more than 380%—demonstrating the long-term value of sustained partnership and support.
Building on a legacy of impact, MEDA is investing in the future of entrepreneurship. Through expanded educational programming, innovative financing solutions, and aligned alliances, MEDA is equipping entrepreneurs with the tools they need to compete, adapt, and thrive in an evolving economy.

“As we celebrate 55 years of impact, we are also looking ahead,” said Dorothy Bridges, president and CEO of MEDA. “Our commitment has never wavered: to champion entrepreneurs, remove barriers to opportunity, and ensure business owners have the resources and support to succeed. MEDA will continue to stand beside bold entrepreneurs for generations to come.”

Kevin Besikof, Chair of the MEDA board of directors, added, “MEDA has proven that investing in entrepreneurs strengthens our economy, creates jobs, and builds more resilient communities. As we look ahead, our commitment remains the same: to expand opportunity and foster innovation so every entrepreneur has the chance to succeed.”
For more than five decades, MEDA has demonstrated that when entrepreneurs succeed, communities prosper. That commitment drives our work every day and will define our next chapter.
