Twin Cities Business Named a Top Magazine at National Awards
Twin Cities Business was named one of the top overall magazines at the 2025 Alliance of Area Business Publishers Editorial Excellence Awards, held this year in Ottawa, Canada.
AABP represents nearly 60 regional business magazines and tabloids throughout North America. The annual Editorial and Design Excellence Competition is coordinated and judges by faculty at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.
TCB was recognized with a bronze award for “best magazine.” Judges called out the magazine’s “Agenda” front of book section, authoritative local columnists, “robust and visual” cover stories. They pointed to the annual StartMN section on entrepreneurship and innovation as “a standout with a variety of focused storytelling and dynamic design.” Silver in the category went to D CEO Magazine out of Dallas, and Hawaii Business took gold.
“It’s an honor to be held up as one of the best among our peers from around the country,” TCB editor in chief Allison Kaplan said. “This award recognizes the work of our entire team—writers, editors, designers. We spend most of the year thinking about our competition on the ground in Minnesota, so it’s energizing to return home from this conference knowing that we stood out among other news organizations dedicated to business journalism, and serving an audience of managers and leaders.”
That wasn’t the only award for TCB at the ceremony on June 20.
TCB took home a gold award in the “Best Profile on a Person or Company” category for October/November 2024 cover story “Houston White Means Business,” written by Kaplan. “Entrepreneur Houston White represents more than one person making a mark in business; his work taps into much larger themes about the people and places that attract investments,” judges said. “Navigating the context of investment and branding decisions in a social landscape, the story is told through a combination of nice scenes, potent context and quotes and moments that show off White’s personality.”
And TCB executive editor Adam Platt was recognized with a silver award in the “Bylined Commentary” category for his Plattitudes column, which last year included perspective on the battle between restaurant owners and unions in Minneapolis, an a big picture analysis of the ride sharing business in the midst of the city’s standoff with Uber and Lyft.
“The columns provide a street-level view of challenges that require more than yes-no, right-wrong, or red-blue,” judges said. “Accountability and practicality are central to the conversations.”
