UnitedHealth Group CFO Makes Fortune “40 Under 40”

UnitedHealth Group's Mike Mikan ranked 13th on Fortune's prestigious "40 Under 40" list-the only executive from a Minnesota-based company to make the cut.

G. Mike Mikan, chief financial officer (CFO) of Minnetonka-based UnitedHealth Group, Inc., ranked 13th on Fortune's 2010 list of “40 Under 40”-an annual list of the fastest-rising stars in the business community who are under the age of 40.

Mikan, age 39, has never previously made the list, and he is the only executive from a Minnesota-based company that made the cut. According to Fortune, the Minnesota native joined UnitedHealth Group in 1998, and the company has since grown its revenue from $17 billion to nearly $90 billion. Mikan, who previously served as CFO of UnitedHealth Group subsidiary UnitedHealthcare, was elected CFO of the parent company in 2006.

Marc Andreessen-the 39-year-old cofounder of Netscape, Opsware, and other entities-topped the “40 Under 40” list, followed by the 26-year-old founder and CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg.

Fortune also compiled a list of the highest-paid executives under the age of 40 from Fortune 1,000 companies. Mikan ranked third on the list, raking in $5.76 million in 2009 total compensation.

Mikan trailed James Murdoch, the 37-year-old chairman and CEO of News Corporation of Europe and Asia, who received $8.8 million last year. Matt Madox, the 35-year-old CFO and treasurer of Las Vegas-based Wynn Resorts, topped the list with $15 million in total compensation last year.

Mikan's inclusion on the “40 Under 40” list marks the second time this month that Fortune has recognized a UnitedHealth Group executive for their leadership. The magazine recently named Gail Boudreaux, executive vice president of UnitedHealth Group, as well as Shari Ballard-president of Richfield-based Best Buy Company, Inc.'s Americas division-as two of the 50 most-powerful women in business.

UnitedHealth Group is Minnesota's largest public company based on its revenue, which totaled $87.14 billion in its most recently completed fiscal year.
