Target Plans In-Store Pickup Service, Smaller CityTargets

The in-store pickup service would bring Target up to speed with some competitors, but some analysts reportedly question whether Target can implement the program in time for the holidays.

Gearing up for the all-important holiday shopping season, Minneapolis-based Target Corporation plans to introduce a service that allows customers to pick up online orders at stores.

That’s according to a recent Star Tribune report, which pointed out that competitors like Wal-Mart and Best Buy Company already offer in-store pickup services.

Target reportedly hopes to roll out its new service—called Buy Online, Pick Up in Store (BOPS)—to all of its 1,800 U.S. stores by the so-called “Black Friday” rush in late November.

Target also plans to have its employees test whether they can retrieve digital purchases in stores the same day they bought them, the Star Tribune reported. That test is expected to occur later this year.

Analysts, however, have reportedly indicated that updating inventory systems at all 1,800 stores in time for the holidays will pose a challenge for Target. To learn more, read the full Star Tribune story here.

Meanwhile, a separate report by the Minneapolis newspaper said that Target is considering making its CityTarget store format even smaller.

The CityTarget format is designed for urban locations, and when the company rolled them out a couple of years ago, it said they would be about 60,000 to 100,000 square feet and feature a “reduced, tailored merchandise selection.” The retailer opened the smaller stores in cities like Chicago and San Francisco.

The Star Tribune pointed out that reducing the format even further will likely give Target more options as it looks for more areas in which to add CityTarget stores.
