Target Grooming 10 Beauty Startups in Minneapolis Accelerator Program

Hair and skincare brands from around the U.S. flew up to Target’s headquarters to learn about ways to step up their retail game.

The beauty market is constantly evolving and beauty influencers are to thank for that. Whether it’s YouTube beauty vloggers or Insta-glammers, smaller niche brands — specifically with natural ingredients — have grown in demand.
In effort to become part of that revolution, Target announced it would mentor ten emerging beauty brands boasting fresh ideas from across the globe. Those up-and-coming startups last week made the trip to Target’s headquarters in Minneapolis for a weeklong “mini retail boot camp,” referred to by the big box retailer as its Target Takeoff series.
The program was the second rendition of the boot camp, which last year focused on better-for-you products. This year’s beauty startups partook in workshops and received advice from Target executives, while also learning about the intricacies of the retail industry.
At the end of the event on Friday, the startups pitched their products to an expert panel styled after the television show “Shark Tank” — Target called theirs the “Bark Tank” after their mascot Bullseye. After receiving individual feedback from the judges, the startups were sent home to refine their pitches, which they will give again to Target leadership in late May.

Here are the ten brands taking part in the Target Takeoff beauty series:
adwoa beauty
The West African influenced beauty brand (based in Dallas) specializes in a unique blend of natural ingredients providing chemical-free care for all types of curls and kinks. In an effort to fully represent diversity, the socially ‘woke’ brand — founded in October 2017 — wanted to provide a realistic portrayal for misrepresented hair types in the media.
This hormonal-based skincare line from Los Angeles addresses women’s skin needs while supporting its changes through each step of their 28-day hormonal cycle. While promoting the message of strength and empowerment for women, this organic brand caters to anything from hormonal acne to pregnancy and motherhood.
Eu’Genia Shea
This skincare line specializes in Shea butter moisturizers made from all-natural ingredients. Eu’Genia Shea is a family-run business out of Brooklyn, New York that supports equal opportunity and wages for women in Ghana. Fifteen percent of their profit goes to education in order to help support young women.
New York City-based Girl+Hair (also known as GirlandHair) is a hair care line that caters specifically to women who seek to protect, cleanse, and nourish their hair while wearing extensions, wigs, weaves, and/or braids. The founder, Dr. Camille Verovic, was inspired by female empowerment, health, and wellness and adopted the Under Hair Care idea in 2009 while trying to find a way to maintain her natural hair underneath hair extensions.

This natural hair and skincare line celebrates natural beauty by targeting women of all types. Heritage1933 was created in St. Louis, Missouri in 2015 in an effort to break narrow beauty standards and stereotypes. Growing up in shelter homes, the founder Latoya Thompson gives back to women and children in local shelters by donating tools and hair-care products.
Hue For Every Man
Sherman Oaks, California-based Hue is a hair and skincare line for men that targets every hair type, but is ideal for textured, curly, and/or coarse hair. Its products are free from ingredients such as petroleum and silicone — distinguishing it from most haircare lines that target those hair types.
Oars + Alps
This men's skincare line, created by two women, offers natural products that are travel-friendly. Chicago-based Oars + Alps sells their products at a friendly cost for all men’s skin types.
ROSEN Skincare
Rosen is a natural skincare line created in Paso Robles, California by a young group of women targeting acne. This line is free of harsh chemicals and is strongly effective for prone-oily skin; in other words, not recommended for sensitive skin.
Sienna Naturals
This hair care line out of New York City caters to all types of curls from beachy waves to kinky ringlets. Sienna aims to improve hair’s natural texture with their unique products that treat hair care like skincare by providing a four-step routine.
Yuni Mindful Beauty For An Active Life
Yuni is a yoga-inspired natural beauty brand that provides hair and skin products while promoting mindfulness and stress relief. This Hermosa Beach, California-based beauty line was created by a married couple who have a background in yoga, agriculture, business and beauty.
