Star Tribune To Lose 19 Veterans In The Newsroom In Buyouts Triggered By Paper’s Sale

The 19 journalists have 586 years of combined experience.

Nineteen veteran journalists at the Star Tribune are taking a buyout and leaving the paper under a contract clause triggered by the closing of the sale of the paper last week to Glen Taylor.

The journalists, members of the Newspaper Guild, took advantage of the union clause that called for up to 26 weeks of severance pay for those leaving upon a sale. They're leaving a newsroom of about 250 people. Most will leave July 18.

The 19 journalists have 586 years of combined experience. The paper has said it will replace those leaving, although the institutional memory and experience in this market will be impossible to replace.

A statement from Editor Rene Sanchez to the newsroom said:

Nineteen of our newsroom colleagues have decided to submit their resignations and receive severance pay under the terms of the Guild contract that deal with a change of ownership of the company. Together, these 19 people represent 586 years of service to the Star Tribune. We will greatly miss them and all that they have contributed to the newsroom and to the Star Tribune. To honor these colleagues, we will gather for a farewell ceremony at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 17, in the Assembly Rooms next to the cafeteria. Please join us for that gathering. Most of the 19 will have their final day at the Star Tribune on Friday, July 18, although a few of them will depart this Friday and next Wednesday. Three of them have volunteered to stay into August and September, and so we’ll enjoy having them around a bit longer.
