OptumHealth Opens Training Center in Eden Prairie

The training center is open to the public and offers personalized athletic coaching, performance testing, classes, strength training equipment, and a 13-lane pool.

OptumHealth, Inc., on Saturday officially opened its new training center in Eden Prairie, which is geared toward endurance athletes who are training at all levels.

The facility-called OptumHealth Performance Center-features 7,000 square feet of training space and a 13-lane pool. The center is open to the public and offers personalized athletic coaching, performance testing, classes, and strength training and cardio equipment.

Frank Blackstock, senior vice president of OptumHealth said that the training center has been in the works since this spring after the idea was brought up at the beginning of 2010.

He said that the training center aligned with OptumHealth's mission to “help people stay healthy, get healthy, or live with health conditions” and that the company wanted to offer a “one-stop-shop” for endurance athletes to train, test, and build a community.

The center currently has 11 coaches. Personalized coaching packages start at $150 per month and can be done virtually. Monthly memberships-which include access to the facility, pool, and unlimited classes-are also $150 per month.

All classes are $15 with the exception of the evening “Ride the Course” class, a bike class that features a computrainer studio for simulated riding courses, and the four-hour Saturday morning spin class, which are $20 and $30, respectively.

Blackstock said that the training center is the only one of its kind in Minnesota, and that the company plans to roll out others like it in major metropolitan areas across the nation. However, the OptumHealth has not revealed what cities it is considering to expand in.

In the few short days that the center has been open, it has seen major growth. Blackstock declined to reveal how many memberships have been sold, but said that by Wednesday, classes have “doubled in size” since opening on Saturday.

OptumHealth, Inc., is a subsidiary of Minnetonka-based UnitedHealth Group, Minnesota's largest public company based on revenue, which totaled $87.14 billion during the most recent fiscal year.
