Sleep Number recently packed up its pillows in Plymouth to make its bed at a modern, sleek new corporate headquarters in downtown Minneapolis. The $1.44 billion mattress company signed a 15-year lease for two floors of the five-story building at 1001 Third Ave. S., including naming rights. The move from suburbs to skyscraper signals a cultural shift for the company formerly known as Select Comfort. With open space for collaboration, workout equipment, and an outdoor deck, engagement is up for the company’s 900 employees, despite initial reservations about the hassles of commuting downtown, says vice president of brand experience Angela Gearhart, who worked closely with CEO Shelly Ibach on the design of the new space. “We wanted to be more centrally located as well as culturally evolve the organization.”

Downtown held a very specific appeal in that evolution. “Being in downtown is more tech-forward,” Gearhart says. She adds that the location “allows us to pull from a more diverse employee pool. And from a talent perspective, it was more of an attraction being downtown versus suburban.” Now settled downtown, there’s no time to rest—Sleep Number will open its first Manhattan retail store this month.
