New Downtown Mpls. Gym Offers Rooftop Workout Area

Steele Fitness plans to open a new fitness center above Lunds grocery store that will feature a three-season training area on the roof.

Steele Fitness, a Golden Valley-based upscale personal training and fitness company, said Tuesday that it plans to open a downtown Minneapolis fitness center that will offer “Minnesota’s first rooftop training space.”

The new location, its fourth, will open in September and will be located at 12th Street and Hennepin Avenue.

The two-story fitness center will occupy the second floor of the historic Sturr-Bullard Motor Company building, and a training area will be located on the rooftop. The building also houses a Lunds grocery store and wine and spirits shop on the first level, both of which are set to open Thursday.

Steele’s 8,000-square-foot space will include individual and group workout areas, luxury locker rooms, and retail space for exercise clothing and gear.

According to Steele, the equipment on the roof will be specially designed to withstand weather extremes, but the rooftop space will be heated so that it can serve as a three-season workout area.

“We love the vibrancy of downtown Minneapolis, and we’re thrilled that we’re able to bring another amenity to downtown,” Steele Smiley, founder and CEO of Steele Fitness, said in a statement.

The Sturr-Bullard Motor Company building, built in 1914, formerly housed a showroom for Ford and Nash vehicles.

Steele’s three other fitness centers are located in Wayzata, Edina, and St. Paul.
