Mpls. 2nd Among “Top 10 Cities for Affordable Vacations”

The Twin Cities metro area has a variety of attractions that are either free or offered at discounts, according to Livability.

Minneapolis is among the 10 cities in the country where fun and relaxation don't bust one's budget, according to Livability.

Livability is a website that bills itself as a resource on the best places in the United States to live, visit, work, play, and explore. Minneapolis ranked second on its list of the “top 10 cities for affordable vacations.”

The website ranked cities based on their offering of unique, free activities-both indoors and out-and the availability of discounts on otherwise expensive attractions.

According to Livability, Minneapolis and the surrounding metro area have a variety of attractions that offer some great deals. For example, 2012 promotions at the Mall of America include free events and rides for toddlers every Tuesday, daily discounts on rides after 5 p.m., and discount tickets to the mall's Sea Life Minnesota Aquarium, which are available online.

The metro area also offers several free attractions, including 180-plus parks and 166 miles of trails that showcase the area's landscapes and historic neighborhoods, according to Livability, which also praised the Twin Cities' 13.3-mile chain of lakes.

The website touted the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and St. Paul's Como Park Zoo & Conservatory, both of which offer free admission. The Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden also offer free admission on Thursday nights from 5 to 9 p.m., Livability pointed out.

Louisville, Kentucky ranked first on the list; San Antonio; Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Greenville, South Carolina rounded out the top five after Minneapolis.
