Mayo Clinic Taps Dr. John Halamka to Lead Technology Platform

The Mayo Clinic Platform is aimed at improving health care with information gathering and data analytics.

Mayo Clinic has appointed Dr. John Halamka president of its new technology platform, effective Jan. 1.

The platform uses data analytics to improve health care efficiency. Mayo Clinic has likened the  concept to Airbnb.

“[On Airbnb] millions of people can list millions of rooms to be seen by hundreds of millions of people with low cost and little effort,” Halamka told the Star Tribune. “A [similar] platform in health care could improve quality and safety and access and efficiency.”

Halamka said the platform will initially focus on three areas: home hospital, advanced digital diagnostics, and clinical data analytics. These applications will enable Mayo Clinic to comb through past patients’ data and better predict treatment options.

“Dr. Halamka has a proven track record of success in innovation and value creation,” Gianrico Farrugia, Mayo Clinic president and CEO, said in a news release. “His extensive experience and network will help power the Mayo Clinic Platform forward to benefit our patients and to support Mayo Clinic's path for the future.”

Halamka most recently served as executive director of the Health Technology Exploration Center at Beth Israel Lahey Health in Massachusetts. Prior to that, he was chief information officer for more than 20 years.

A resident of Massachusetts, Halamka is also a practicing emergency medicine physician and runs Unity Farm, an animal sanctuary outside of Boston.

Halamka holds a degree in medical microbiology and public policy from Stanford University and a medical degree from the University of California-San Francisco.

For his new role with Mayo Clinic, Halamka aims to commute regularly from his Massachusetts farm to Rochester, according to the Strib.

Dr. Clark Otley will join Halamka on the platform’s leadership team. Otley has been chosen to serve as the platform’s chief medical officer.
