March Stage Madness

March Stage Madness

The month's best choices for VIP guests, networking and entertainment.

After months of bomb cyclones and other wonky weather, March is likely to come into the Twin Cities roaring like the lion and leaping like the proverbial hare. To celebrate the return of this transitional month and—fingers crossed—the arrival of a dulcet spring, we’ve gathered a short list of high-energy musicals, captivating plays and other events to entertain your clients.

School of Rock

If your clients have a healthy appetite for fun, treat them to front-row seats at School of Rock, the cult film-turned-hit Broadway show featuring a cast of preternaturally gifted school-age rockers jamming to Lou Reed, the Rolling Stones and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Kick off the evening at Zelo ( on Nicollet Mall with sparkling prosecco, calamari fritti and Parmesan-crusted shrimp. Stroll over to the glittering Hennepin Theatre District and stop at the Orpheum concession stand for M&Ms and Skittles before the curtains open on this exuberant musical.
March 6-11, Orpheum Theatre,

Clients who are “not from here” will be fascinated by Familiar at the Guthrie. Written by Macalester alum and The Walking Dead actress Danai Gurira, the play opened at the Yale Repertory Theatre with a short off-Broadway run before circling back to Minneapolis, the setting for this funny, thoughtful story. Convene at the Guthrie’s Sea Change ( restaurant for green-tea gimlets, tuna carpaccio and hamachi before heading upstairs to watch Tendi, a young Zimbabwean-American woman, clash with her family over her desire to observe Zimbabwean wedding traditions before marrying her white fiancé from Minnetonka.
March 10-April 14, Guthrie Theater,

The Pirates of Penzance

For a brief respite from blustery March weather and other modern realities, take your clients to the historic 1919 Hamm Building in St. Paul. Score a table at Vieux Carré ( and let the good times roll with decadent oysters Rockefeller and piña doble cocktails made with rum, pineapple, pomegranate and velvet falernum. Walk down the hall and upstairs to Park Square Theatre and spend the evening at sea in a rollicking modern reprise of Gilbert and Sullivan’s 1879 Pirates of Penzance, a farcical operetta that unfolds on a ship chuffing its way to New York.
Through March 25, Park Square Theatre,

Dance ’Til You Drop

For an only-in-Minnesota experience, indulge your clients with an evening in vintage St. Paul style. Start with the signature coal-fired pizza at Black Sheep Pizza ( Walk a couple blocks to the intimate Ralph Rapson-designed History Theatre, where every seat is within feet of the thrust stage. The play, penned by local playwright Carson Kreitzer, explores the fascinating psychology of dance marathons, a craze that swept the country in the 1920s and ’30s.
March 24-April 15, History Theatre,
