Mall Of America Will Close On Thanksgiving Day

It's a bold step as Black Friday sales continue to creep into holiday celebrations.

Mall of America will close on Thanksgiving Day, reversing a trend of earlier starting times for Black Friday shopping in recent years.

Mpls-St. Paul Magazine reports that the megamall will close down, including Nickolodeon Universe and the movie theater, and is encouraging retailers to shut down as well.

“In years past we’ve all rallied together to answer the call for 24/7 shopper access that the Thanksgiving/Black Friday weekend brings. However, it also meant that team members may not have been able to share the day with family and friends,” MOA executives said in a letter sent to Mall of America employees and tenants Wednesday morning. “That is why this year we have made the decision to close on Thanksgiving Day so that team members can put that energy where it matters most, into making memories with the people they care about most.”

About 15,000 people work directly for the mall or one of its retailers.
