Major Renovation Underway at Maplewood Mall

The makeover will include redesign of the shopping center's 20,000 square-foot food court.

The Maplewood Mall in suburban St. Paul will soon get a major facelift, owner Simon Property Group announced Tuesday. Construction will begin in April and is scheduled to wrap up by early 2012.

Renovation plans include the redesign of the mall's 20,000-square-foot food court, upgrading the mall's entrances, new soft-seating areas and flooring, redesign of common areas, new landscaping, and new exterior signage.

In addition, the mall's lighting and sound systems will be upgraded, Simon Property said in a statement.

The Indianapolis-based company announced last month that it is also undertaking a major renovation of Edina's Southdale Mall, which the company owns as well. Southdale's planned renovation includes adding a major new tenant-Herberger's-and a new food court.

The Maplewood Mall opened in 1974, and is anchored by JCPenney, Kohl's, Macy's, and Sears. The 911,879-square-foot shopping center has more than 140 stores and restaurants.
