Last Call? Minneapolis to Close ‘Bar Areas’ in Bars, Restaurants, Clubs

Designed to stem spread of Covid-19, the new policy will affect approximately 640 businesses.

On Wednesday afternoon, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey issued a new emergency regulation that will “effectively close bar areas in restaurants, clubs, and other indoor spaces.” The mayor’s office billed the move as a “targeted approach” to curtail the spread of Covid-19 at bars and restaurants within the city.

A city press release outlined the extent of the impact of the new regulation: “The new measure will affect roughly 640 bars, brewpubs, tap rooms, and adult entertainment businesses.”

The new regulation goes into effect at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1.

The mayor’s regulation does not require bars to close, but it does ban customers from sitting at the bar inside of the bar. Provided the bar has tables, servers can bring drinks to customers there. Hightop tables are also allowed. The city’s emergency regulation limits the number of people who can sit at a table to four, unless they are members of the same family.

“Across the country we’ve seen data clearly show that a night out at the bar is leading to nights in the hospital for family, friends, and neighbors,” said Frey. “By focusing on bar areas, which are proven to be hot beds for congregation and community spread, we can help keep Minneapolis trends stable. That commitment to public health gives us the best shot at both protecting frontline workers – a disproportionate share of whom are people of color – and keeping our businesses open.”

According to information from the city, nine Minneapolis bars have met the state’s definition of a “patron outbreak” with at least seven customers testing positive for Covid-19. Three Minneapolis bars have met the definition of a “workplace outbreak” with at least three employees of the establishment testing positive.

According to previous reports and public information the nine bars with patron outbreaks in Minneapolis are:
