To serve cities that aim to do things greener, Tennant developed the Green Machine 500ze, an electric-powered vacuum street sweeper. The sweeper runs off a lithium-ion battery, so it emits no exhaust, reduces fuel costs, and runs quietly. Built with recyclable materials, the machine also suppresses dust with a misting system that uses one third the water of standard sweepers. It can operate in “full sweep mode” for more than eight hours on one battery charge.
Tennant partnered with lithium-ion cell manufacturers, battery management experts, and software and charging companies to develop its own brand of battery packs, a new skill set within the company. The 500ze was selected to clean at a climate conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December 2009.
