3M has improved on the “sand” in sandpaper. Traditional abrasive particles, known as grains or grits, tend to have irregular, dull, or rough edges. The company’s new Cubitron II abrasive products utilize ceramic oxide grains that are shaped into uniform-sized triangles and oriented with cutting edges toward the work surface. The consistently sized grains provide a standard scratch depth on materials and function like cutting tools. The shaped grains are also self-sharpening, which improves the abrasives’ overall performance, and produces less friction and heat. The abrasive products grind faster and require less physical effort from the operator.
