CW Technology Acquires St. Cloud Phone Provider

The move enables CW Technology to expand its VoIP business further into Central Minnesota and adds 60 clients to its current 320.

Duluth-based CW Technology has acquired St. Cloud-based phone systems provider Innovative Telecom Solutions (ITS)-a move that will add 60 clients to its roster of 320.

Financial terms of the acquisition, which was completed in December but just announced, were not disclosed. The merged company has 29 employees, and there were no staff changes in conjunction with the deal.

David Manion, CEO of CW Technology, told Twin Cities Business on Tuesday that the acquisition allows it to expand offerings in the St. Cloud area.

Until five years ago, CW Technology exclusively provided managed, outsourced IT services, Manion said. In recent years, the company has begun additionally offering Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) services using ShoreTel phone systems-but it only offered local support in Duluth and Mankato. Now, CW Technology will offer its VoIP support services in St. Cloud as well with the help of ITS.

VoIP is a technology that enables phone calls to be made using a broadband Internet connection instead of a regular (or analog) phone line.

Manion said that the deal appealed to his company because it enables CW Technology to expand its VoIP business further into Central Minnesota.

ITS provides Nortel business phone systems and Nortel support, but its phone systems are being phased out due to the fact that Nortel was bought by Avaya, a large enterprise communications systems provider. ITS saw the deal with CW Technology as a way to continue to support its clients with a new offering-next-generation phone systems in VoIP, Manion said.

CW Technology was founded in 1984. In addition to its headquarters office in Duluth, it also has offices in Mankato and St. Cloud.
