Brewer Founding Fathers Rolls Out New Beer, Expands

Long Lake-based Founding Fathers Products-which plans to donate 50 percent of profits every year to support military troops-has introduced a new beer and plans to expand distribution to seven states.

Long Lake-based brewery Founding Fathers Products announced Tuesday that it has rolled out a new beer.

Founding Fathers Light Beer is now available in restaurants, bars, and liquor stores in Minnesota and North Dakota. The beer is a blend of two- and six-row malt and has a light-bodied flavor and a small amount of carbonation, according to the company's website.

Founding Fathers launched in 2009. Its first beer, Founding Fathers Lager, hit store shelves in November and quickly sold its first batch of 7,500 cases. The company-which currently distributes its beer in Minnesota and North Dakota-plans to expand its distribution to Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee by April.

Founding Fathers has pledged to donate 50 percent of its profits every year to organizations that support military troops and their families, including Tee it up for the Troops, the Minnesota Military Family Foundation, and the Armed Forces Relief Trust.

“We have been very encouraged by how well Founding Fathers Lager sold in our first run and are excited to add the light beer to our product line,” Founder and CEO Phil Knutsen said in a statement. “The largest breweries in the Unites States are now foreign-owned, and Founding Fathers is not only owned and brewed in America-half of our profits will go to those serving in our armed forces and their families.”

The company hasn't had a profitable year yet because its first beer wasn't introduced until November. It expects to be profitable this year.
