Best Buy to Serve as Exclusive Retailer of Remote Medical Exam Device TytoHome

The handheld device from Tyto Care makes it possible to get a medical exam from home, which fits Best Buy’s growing focus on health tech.

Continuing its focus on health tech, Best Buy will become the exclusive retailer of Tyto Home, a handheld device that enables on-demand, remote medical exams.

With various applicable attachments, TytoHome—the core product of Israeli tech company Tyto Care—can be used to analyze the heart, lungs, skin, ears, throat, and abdomen, as well as measure body temperature. A smartphone app walks the user through capturing the needed images and explaining their symptoms.

After a user’s self-examination with TytoHome, the data is sent to the individual’s primary care provider for diagnosis of acute care situations including ear infections, sore throats, fever, cold and flu, upper respiratory infections, and more. Related prescriptions are also sent virtually upon diagnosis.   

The device costs $299.99, and there is a fee of up to $59 for each “visit,” but through the TytoHome system, access to a provider is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Per terms of the Best Buy partnership, TytoHome is available for purchase exclusively on, and in select Minnesota Best Buy stores, with availability to come in stores across North and South Dakota, California, and Ohio. 

The Best Buy retail partnership is a step toward mainstream exposure for Tyto Care, which already has established partnerships with multiple telehealth platforms, including LiveHealth Online powered by American Well, and with regional healthcare systems, including Sanford Health.

SanfordHealth will provide care to TytoHome users in Minnesota and the Dakotas; LiveHealth Online serves as the telehealth provider for TytoHome beyond that region.

For Best Buy, the TytoHome deal builds on the retailer’s growing health-focused assets. It comes less than a year after the retailer purchased GreatCall Inc., a company that sells mobile devices that connect users—primarily elderly individuals—with health and personal emergency response services.

“We know technology can improve the quality of life of the aging population and those who care for them,” Best Buy chairman and CEO Hubert Joly has said. Joly, who announced plans to step down from the top spot earlier this week, spoke about GreatCall and opportunities to solve health problems through technology in a December profile in Twin Cities Business. “Now, we have a great opportunity to serve the needs of these customers by combining GreatCall’s expertise with Best Buy’s unique merchandising, marketing, sales and services capabilities.”

That deal itself was part of Best Buy’s 2020 plan to offer more technology addressing key human needs.
