7 MN Cos. Among “100 Best Corporate Citizens”

Seven Minnesota companies made Corporate Responsibility (CR) magazine’s latest list of the “100 Best Corporate Citizens,” with St. Paul-based Ecolab Inc. breaking into the top 10.

Ecolab, which ranked seventh, was joined on the top 100 list by fellow Minnesota companies 3M Company, General Mills, Mosaic Company, Target Corporation, Medtronic, and Hormel Foods. See the full list here.

To compile the list, CR looked at 298 factors among seven categories: climate change, employee relations, environmental, financial, governance, human rights, and philanthropy. Only companies included on the Russell 1000 index were considered, meaning it was restricted to some of the country's largest companies, and CR used publicly available data. (See the full methodology here.)

Diversified manufacturer 3M, based in Maplewood, ranked 34th on the list, holding the same position it held last year.

Golden Valley-based General Mills Inc., slipped 13 places to 46th after ranking 33rd the previous year. The food manufacturer includes brands such as Betty Crocker and Pillsbury.

The Mosaic Company, based in Plymouth, moved one spot lower to 53rd after placing 52nd on last year’s list. Mosaic produces and markets concentrated phosphate and potash crop fertilizers, as well as feed ingredients within the agriculture industry.

Minneapolis-based retailer Target moved up one spot, reaching 61st this year.

Medtronic, the Fridley-based medical device manufacturer, placed 81st after not appearing on last year's list.

Finally, Austin-based Hormel, the manufacturer and marketer of consumer-branded food and meat products, ranked 89th after placing 31st on the 2013 list.

All seven companies are among Minnesota’s 15 largest public companies based on revenue.
