3 MN Cos. Make National “Best Places to Work” List

Three Minnesota companies-Colle+McVoy, Carmichael Lynch, and Quality Bicycle Products-were recognized on Outside magazine's "Best Places to Work" list for fostering an outstanding work-life balance.

Outside magazine recently released its fourth-annual 50 “Best Places to Work” list, and three Minnesota companies made the cut.

Minneapolis-based Colle+McVoy ranked 10th. The magazine described the local ad agency as having “the soul of a start-up despite having been around for more than 75 years.”

According to Outside, Colle+McVoy offers employees annual and instant bonuses, a variety of free fitness activities including massages, and a yearly employee recognition awards program. It also boasts a rooftop deck with views of downtown Minneapolis-perfect for morning yoga, company-provided Friday breakfasts, and parties.

The advertising agency supports organizations such as People for Bikes, the United Way, and Smile Exchange. In addition, Colle+McVoy supports green initiatives; efforts include replacing disposable dishware with washable plates and cups. And the agency's office was built to allow efficient air movement and natural light, Outside said.

Coming in 39th on the list is Minneapolis-based advertising and public relations firm Carmichael Lynch.

Outside points to a variety of factors that contribute to positive employee morale and culture there-like yearly and “on-the-spot” bonuses, an annual “O'Gong Show” talent competition, and company-sponsored sports clubs. Employees also work longer summertime hours in exchange for seven additional paid days off to enjoy the warm weather-and the office is traditionally closed from Christmas to New Year's Day.

Carmichael Lynch also contributes time and money to Creatives for Causes and Sharing and Caring Hands. And it's “going green” in numerous ways-it was highlighted as the first major agency in the Midwest to move to 100 percent wind-sourced power, according to Outside.

The final Minnesota company to make the list is 49th-ranked, Bloomington-based bicycle distributor Quality Bicycle Products.

In Outside's company profile, it cites open, door-less offices, no dress code, bonuses, and free yoga and exercise clubs. Employees are also encouraged to take demo bikes for a spin during lunchtime or before or after work.

Every holiday season, Quality Bicycle Products purchases bikes for every member of four different families, an effort the company refers to as Bikes 4 Families. Quality Bicycle Products also encourages employees to be active in the “green movement” by cycling, walking, carpooling, or using mass transit instead of driving alone to work. Employees who do this earn credits that can be used to purchase the company's products.

Boulder, Colorado-based Natural Habitat Adventures, which Outside says has been a leader in responsible nature travel and ecotourism for more than 25 years, topped the “Best Places to Work” list.

Outside's yearlong selection process began by identifying companies with at least 15 employees working in the United States. Employees of the eligible companies completed surveys and questionnaires to share information about benefits, compensation, policies, job satisfaction, environmental initiatives, and community outreach programs.

“These 50 companies are successful precisely because they support a proper work-life balance,” Michael Roberts, executive editor of Outside, said in a statement. “Happy workers who feel part of an active community are guaranteed to be more engaged and productive. And the companies on the list are offering amazing benefits: organic cafeterias, on-site fitness classes, reimbursements for gym memberships and ski passes, opportunities for on-the-clock community service, and much more.”
