Xcel Energy Names New Chief Security Officer and VP

James Sample joins Xcel after decades in security management.

Minneapolis-based utility provider Xcel Energy announced Tuesday that it has hired James Sample as chief security officer and vice president. In the role, he’ll lead the company’s security risk management program, which encompasses cybersecurity, physical security, and personnel safety.

He’ll also serve as senior manager of critical infrastructure protection for North American Electric Reliability Corp. (NERC).

Sample brings 30 years of security-related experience, along with a decade of experience in the energy industry. Most recently, he worked for Ernst & Young as principal of its Americas Energy division and leader of operational technology cybersecurity for the company.

Previous jobs include chief information security officer for Pacific Gas & Electric, director of enterprise information security and policy for the Tennessee Valley Authority, and principal systems engineer for the Science Application International Corp.

“Jamey brings a wealth of experience and expertise to Xcel Energy’s security operations,” said Brett Carter, Xcel’s executive vice president and chief customer and innovation officer, in a news release. “[He] is particularly qualified to help us continue to protect against the evolving security threats our industry faces today.”
