Manny Villafaña, the legendary—and tireless—med-tech entrepreneur, whose innovative pacemakers and heart valves launched Cardiac Pacemakers (acquired by Boston Scientific), St. Jude Medical (Abbott), and ATS Medical (Medtronic), believes Medical 21 will be his “biggest company, I’m sure.” Founded in 2016, Plymouth-based Medical 21 has been developing an artificial coronary artery that would simplify heart bypass surgeries. In 2021, the company blew past its $10 million funding goal, allowing it to set up human trials in Europe. Those trials will begin in 2022. Villafaña also plans to add $30 million to $40 million in additional funding via a Regulation A+ financing.
