Venture capital has long been a universe of white guys. Twin Cities natives Paul Campbell and Chris Brooks, who are Black, are looking to rewrite the rules of the game. They founded Minneapolis-based Brown Venture Group in 2018 to focus on technology companies led by BIPOC entrepreneurs. They are near closing an initial $50 million fund. In early August, they announced that Fortune 500 retailer Best Buy had pledged up to $10 million to its inaugural fund. Says Brooks: “We are on a mission to build out a much broader and more robust ecosystem of investors of color because we think that’s going to raise all the boats at the same time.”
