Minnetonka Lab Will Lay Off 79 Workers

ViroMed Laboratories will begin reducing its staff on July 1.

Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings (LabCorp) recently notified the state of Minnesota that its Minnetonka-based subsidiary, ViroMed Laboratories, Inc., will close a lab and lay off 79 Minnesota workers.

ViroMed performs regulated testing for donors of human cells, tissues, cellular and tissue-based products, and blood, according to its website.

Burlington, North Carolina-based LabCorp recently notified the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development of its job-reduction plan, saying in a letter that it plans to cut 79 of the 104 employees at the lab. The reductions will begin in July and conclude in September, according to the letter.

“Affected employees do not have any bumping rights, and there is no collective bargaining representative for the employees,” the letter states.

ViroMed on Wednesday referred questions to LabCorp; calls to LabCorp seeking additional information about the layoffs were not immediately returned.

The affected employees were notified of the layoffs last week, according to a report by KSTP.
