Nice Ride Drives Inclusion with New Discount Program

The Minneapolis-based bike share company is unlocking new opportunities for residents enrolled in food or transit assistance programs by rolling out Nice Ride for All program.

Nice Ride plans to offer discounted memberships to make its bike share service accessible to the more than 65,000 Minneapolis residents who utilize food or transit assistance programs. 

Nice Ride for All, the new program announced Wednesday, will make discounts available to those enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or the Transit Assistance Program (TAP). Qualifying individuals may apply for Nice Ride for All online with their EBT or Metro Transit Go-To Card number. Anyone who registers for the program before September will only pay $5 for their first year of membership—that’s the traditional cost of each month for discounted members, or each day for non-discounted members. Enrollees will have access to unlimited 60-minute bikeshare rides throughout Minneapolis. 

“Increasing access to low-cost transit options is a cornerstone of our plan to make Minneapolis a greener and more inclusive city,” says Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey. “Nice Ride is furthering both of those goals by making their services more affordable.”

The company, which was purchased in November by Lyft, is also partnering with Prepare + Prosper—a St. Paul-based organization aimed at increasing financial well-being for all through free tax assistance and financial services—to provide referrals to financially underserved members of the community for Fair and Responsible Banking (FAIR) products. 

To celebrate the program launch, Nice Ride is donating $1 of each ride taken on Wednesday to NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center, a North Minneapolis medical, dental, and mental health and human service agency. The two organizations are also working together on community outreach throughout North Minneapolis, utilizing multilingual advertising and providing in-person sign-up opportunities. 

“A healthier future for Minnesota starts with reducing barriers,” says Mike Sammler-Jones, senior director of community relations and internal communications at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, the title sponsor of Nice Ride. “Community-driven solutions are crucial, and it’s great to see Nice Ride and NorthPoint Health & Wellness join forced to increase healthy opportunities for all.”

Nice Ride is also hiring a team of bikeshare ambassadors to spread the word about Nice Ride for All throughout North Minneapolis, Phillips, Cedar-Riverside, and other Minneapolis neighborhoods. 

Nice Ride is installing an additional 575 bike parking hubs and almost 50 additional stations throughout Minneapolis this season. Riders can unlock bikes via app, at station kiosks, or with available member keys.
