Whats On My Desk: WCCO Morning Anchor Jason DeRusha
You see him behind the anchor desk for three and a half hours every morning on WCCO News This Morning, and then again on MidMorning. But before and between broadcasts, Jason DeRusha sits at another desk. A regular desk, little known to social media despite his always-on persona. A desk decorated with awards (he’s earned nine Emmys), pictures of his wife and kids, photos of Twin Cities landmarks, and coffee mugs. A lot of coffee mugs.
Probably to be expected for a guy who sits down at his desk at 3:30 a.m. But DeRusha’s first sips of the day are not caffeinated. He makes a salad smoothie with his NutriBullet before leaving the house at 3 a.m. each work day: two cups power greens, two cups frozen berries, water.
“Guarantees my veggies to start the day,” says the anchor, who is also known for his food coverage on air and in print.
Before sunrise, DeRusha shared his newsroom desk with us.
Drinking vessels: Seven coffee mugs, a water bottle and a YETI thermos that holds my breakfast salad smoothie.

Private office or open work area? We are wide open. Cubicles with no walls. Sometimes I wish I had a private office, if for no other reason that I could occasionally use a nap. Job hazard of anchoring an early morning news program.
View from your desk? I look directly at News Director Kari Patey’s office, which is awesome and awkward. Awesome, because I have instant communication with my boss at all times. She’s a terrific leader and is very collaborative. Awkward, because I’m worried she’ll see how much time I spend on Twitter and Facebook. I sit with most of our morning team: co-anchor Kim Johnson sits next to me, traffic anchor Ali Lucia across, and our executive producer (the leader of the newscast) Bess Ellenson Pratt is diagonal.
How much work do you do at your desk? I am on TV for 3 ½ hours every day, so much of my work happens on the anchor desk. But this is where I prepare for our morning newscast from 4:30-7 a.m., and our MidMorning show from 9-10 a.m. So I’m sitting here between 3:30-4:30 a.m. and again from 7-8:30 a.m.
Can you work at a messy desk? I can work anywhere, but I prefer a relatively clean desk. Not obsessively clean. I mean, I have at least 6 coffee mugs sitting on my desk. But I like to have a clean surface and I do wipe things down fairly often. This will surprise my wife, who is currently wondering why I leave my dirty clothes on the floor next to my bed.
