In times of crisis, the pull of community can be powerful. “When George Floyd was murdered, it reminded me the reason I needed to be here,” says Tonya Jackman Hampton. Her calling is work culture, and at Minneapolis-based Hennepin Healthcare, which she joined in 2020, Jackman Hampton manages an increasingly diverse base of employees and patients. Retention is a big focus—particularly with 600 open jobs, a number that has doubled in the past year. “I want to increase our engagement and trust in senior leadership by giving individuals a sense of belonging,” she says. “What keeps people here are connections and relationships.”
