When Suzanne Rivera arrived at Macalester College in 2020, things were quiet due to the pandemic, and it would be a year before life started to return to normal. Her arrival coincided with a strategic planning process that could help guide her tenure at the St. Paul college. Its result was a mandate to “sharpen the messaging” around Mac’s uniqueness—the only private liberal arts college in America, it says, that is city-based, residential, and steeped in internationalism, or what it calls "global citizenship." She is asking relevant questions about the academic calendar and pace, both stemming from a dated agrarian model. She plans to spend 2023 on “relationship building [in the Twin Cities], putting down roots; I have a lot of latitude in using my time right now.”
